Wynyard, Billingham, TS22 5NF
As you approach the impressive facade of the building, you start to get a sense of the grandeur that awaits at Wynyard Hall. As you walk through the hotel’s grand hall to reach the restaurant, you can’t help but be charmed by the venue’s exquisitely tasteful brand of elegance. The restaurant is set in a spacious and well-appointed room, with tables that are nicely spaced to offer diners a feeling of privacy and an intimate ambience. The menu is concise and refreshingly uncomplicated, focusing on high-quality ingredients – some of which are foraged from the grounds – and the skills of the talented chefs, which shine through in every dish. We found it diffi cult to choose our meals, because each dish appealed in its own unique way. To start, we ordered the heirloom tomato salad, which my partner described as the best salad she had ever tasted, commenting on the freshness of the ingredients and fl avours. My classic steak tartare with soft quail’s eggs and pickled mushrooms was equally tasty, with little peppers dotted through the tartare adding a little heat to the dish. Our mains followed, with the beautifully tender, slow-cooked short rib accompanied by French fries, garlic mash, a fl attop mushroom and oven-roasted cherry tomatoes. The coq au vin was cooked to perfection and served in a velvety sauce, and accompanied by mash, fi ne beans with bacon and shallots, and mustard-glazed carrots. If you have any room left after your main dish, it’s on to the dessert menu. While there is only a small selection of options, there’s something for everyone. If you prefer to conclude with something savoury, Wynyard Hall offers a cheeseboard with a selection of fi ve top-quality British cheeses. With friendly staff who are happy to offer advice and a truly spectacular setting, Wynyard Hall has the gift of making every meal feel like a special occasion.
