Ewenny Road, Wick, CF71 7QA

Not far from the dunes of Ogmore and the cliffs of Southerndown sits The Star Inn, a traditional village pub complete with slate floor tiles, exposed stone walls and low beams. As well as a self-contained bar, the pub boasts a cosy lounge and restaurant and was named CAMRA’s regional Pub of the Year for 2019.

The restaurant is open from Wednesday to Saturday for lunch and evening meals, and offers Sunday lunch from noon until 5pm. On Thursday night, The Star hosts steak night, serving up everything from swordfish to rib-eye steak, and on Wednesdays guests are offered two substantial burgers for just £15.

On the day of our visit, I opted to start with the chilli squid, which delivered a fiery kick – while my partner opted for the stuffed Portobello mushroom drizzled with balsamic vinegar. The lamb steak was the perfect shade of pink and nicely seasoned, and came accompanied by a thick mushroom sauce and peppered Dauphinoise potatoes. Meanwhile, the duck breast was lightly smoked and came atop a bed of crunchy charred pak choi. For dessert, my partner’s gooey chocolate fondant was paired with a refreshing orange sorbet, while my peach panna cotta was beautifully creamy – the perfect conclusion to a truly satisfying meal.
