In this gentle corner of the Gower, Ian Bennett (chef profile, page 55) presents the type of dining experience that many chefs can only aspire to. He subtly demonstrates his exceptional skill in all aspects of the menu, while remaining sensitive to the preferences of his loyal customers.

Ian has returned to his birthplace after cutting his culinary teeth all over the UK, and being a local boy certainly has its bonuses: who other than a local chef could order lobsters and bass from fishermen still at sea? The use of local produce extends to Welsh beef, Salt Marsh lamb, fruit, vegetables and, of course, Gower potatoes. With the knowledgeable guidance of Ian's wife Jay, we started with boudin blanc of chicken and foie gras on a lentil velouté, and potato and sage gnocchi with wild mushrooms - both demonstrating Ian's exceptional flair for flavour, texture and presentation. Our main courses of braised shoulder of Salt Marsh lamb with boulanger potato, and hake with creamed potato in cockle chowder, served to reiterate the fact that we were in the domain of a Master Chef. Choux buns filled with ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce were the perfect ending to a perfect meal - two courses from the lunch menu were just £15. Year on year, the AA Guide has granted The Welcome to Town its two-rosette status and Les Routiers named it 'Wales Restaurant of the Year' in 2003. Tell your best friends about The Welcome - we certainly will.
