Over 300 years old and practically sinking beneath the weight of smuggling stories and local history, The Ship in Distress lies just metres from the pretty quay at Mudeford. Despite its understandable bias towards seafood and fish, this ancient pub-restaurant also provides for meat eaters and vegetarians, as well as offering light bites and bar food. The brightly painted seascape facade and large patio beer garden with lots of outside seating and comfortable rattan furniture contribute to the friendly, relaxing environment that has made The Ship in Distress such a popular dining option.

I opted to start with the assiette of shellfish - a fine seaside assortment of cockles, whelks, peeled prawns, oysters and shell on prawns (thankfully, the helpful waiter provided a finger bowl). I moved on to fillets of Dover sole cooked in creme fraiche with basil, cherry vine tomatoes and Parmesan. As it was a balmy summer's night, I requested a salad instead of the listed seasonal vegetables, and the attentive and friendly staff were happy to oblige. The indulgent creme brulée I selected to round off my meal was rich and delicious, with a refreshing helping of fresh mixed berries on the side.

With its fish-adorned walls, coastal pictures and two aquariums, The Ship in Distress will satisfy anyone with a taste for the great British seaside
