Tucked away on the outskirts of Cardiff in the beautiful Marshfi eld countryside is Y Maerun, a 19th-century inn reinvented for 21st-century dining. Hosts Leighton and Nicola have renovated the old station hotel, creating a stylish and contemporary venue ideal for intimate dinners, family meals and group celebrations. Multiple levels and nooks and crannies are easily transformed to create intimate dining spaces where customers can truly relax and enjoy the spectacular food, ales and wines on offer.

The core menu offers a range of gorgeous grills, pub classics and quirky twists on favourites such as hanging skewers threaded with chargrilled veg and steak, chicken or halloumi. A selection of mouth-watering starters and decadent desserts will satisfy the most discerning of diners. Y Maerun's true passion for food is showcased on the specials board. Here, fresh local produce takes centre stage in an elegant list of stunning dishes from the skilled kitchen team - perfect for those seeking something a little special.

Overwhelmed by the choice on offer, we entrusted ourselves to the expertise of owner Leighton, asking him to surprise us with his personal favourites. We were presented with bubble and squeak to start, topped with crispy black pudding and bacon and creamy Hollandaise, and a chicken and chorizo parfait from the specials board, which was accompanied by light, crispy bruschetta. A hearty chicken and ham pie with vegetables and chips was then brought out, alongside a brace of perfectly cooked mackerel, served with new potatoes and buttered samphire - a spectacular offering from the specials selection. There is always a homemade pie available on the specials menu, the variety changing frequently to please regular diners looking for new tastes. For the grand finale, we were presented with a sharing platter of chocolate delights and a divinely creamy panna cotta followed by milky lattes and homemade shortbread hearts.

The superb food on offer is matched by the warm welcome offered to every customer by Leighton - his enthusiasm for good food is infectious and engaging
