The Marriott in Cardiff is situated in a prime spot, just a short stroll from the train station and within walking distance of the main tourist attractions, including Cardiff Castle and the Millennium Stadium.

We chose to dine in Zest Restaurant, the hotel's elegant dining venue. Shortly after being seated our drinks order was taken, allowing us to sip our tipples as we perused the menu. It was varied and helpfully separated into sections, with descriptions offering concise summaries of our options. Our attentive and friendly server, Simona, having established any dietary requirements, explained that the menu is hand-crafted to utilise the locally sourced and sustainable produce available in any given season.

I began my Zest experience with the duck and vermicelli noodle salad. It was beautifully presented; a tower of noodles fi lled with shredded duck, cashew nuts and refreshing pieces of watermelon. My guest opted for the Brixham crab balls, which had a lovely kick and came accompanied by delicious cockle popcorn and laverbread tartare sauce. Afterwards, I enjoyed the slow-cooked brisket. Expertly presented, the meat was coated in a sweet, sticky sauce and fell apart when touched. It came with rosemary Dauphinoise and sautéed greens. My partner chose seared Welsh lamb rump, which was cooked to preference and well-matched with purple sprouting broccoli, crushed potatoes and peas, and lashings of gravy. The food was scrumptious, and our plates were soon empty. We couldn't resist having a peek at the dessert menu and, following the waitress' glowing recommendation, I opted for rich chocolate fondant, from which chocolate sauce oozed when cut into. My guest was equally impressed with her rhubarb crumble, which was paired with a decadent clotted cream ice cream.

Totally satisfi ed by our meal, we decided to retire to the hotel's bar. There, a mouth-watering selection of cocktails and mocktails awaited. We sampled a sweet strawberry Daiquiri and a Dark and Stormy. We also spied a bar food menu, which featured traditional favourites such as sausage and mash, alongside sandwiches and burgers.

We left a short time later, ready to sing the Marriott's praises to our friends and family, and discussing when we could make a return visit
