We'd heard the hype and couldn't wait to try Shaam Nights for ourselves. On the weeknight we visited it was buzzing with excited chatter. We sipped a refreshing lemon and mint juice and took in the activity of the open kitchen, where traditional Lebanese and Syrian cooking methods were being employed. From the extensive menu we selected a sharer mezze starter of falafel, vine leaves, hummus, baba ghanoush and tabbouleh, with the addition of lamb kubba (mincemeat, bulgur and special spices). This fresh feast of wonderful flavours was complemented by warm flatbreads straight from the oven. Our Syrian speciality mains were generous and great value: uzy surar, baked pastry filled with rice, mincemeat, peas and nuts; and lamb kabsah, a traditional dish of melt-in-the-mouth lamb and spiced rice. The tiled interior and ambient lighting added to the authentic dining experience; no wonder Shaam Nights is a Cardiff favourite
