If you’re regularly in Cardiff, you’ll have undoubtedly spotted this new addition to St Mary Street. It’s transformed a section of the pedestrianised street into an outdoor seating area, so you would be forgiven for thinking you’d momentarily stepped onto an Italian square, greeted with the low chatter of crowds avidly enjoying a glass or two of the good stuff.

Visiting on a warm September evening, we joined the diners on the terrace and perused the drinks menu. It showcases a selection of hand-picked wine and Prosecco, chosen to match the pastries and savoury treats behind the deli counter. From the food offering I enjoyed the beef bresaola, served with Parmesan, lemon and rocket. My companion was taken with the mixed board, which comprised a selection of deli meats and cheese. It looked beautiful and everything was delicious. Jonathan and Piero pride themselves on the quality of the ingredients that they use, which is reflected in the flavours on show.

Dessert was equally impressive, with Piero’s training as a pastry chef evident in the cannoli, which was the tastiest I’ve ever had. When coupled with the superb wine that Jonathan and his knowledgeable staff are happy to advise on, its easy to see why it’s all too tempting to stay at the Nine Yards until closing time.
