Salthouse on the Square
The Square, Porthcawl, Cardiff, CF36 3BW
Salthouse on the Square: a name that is as pleasing to the ear as one of the restaurant's caramelised, hand-dived scallops is to the tastebuds. The cool blue exterior and fishing boat bar remind the diner that the sea is just a stone's throw away; bag a table by the window and you'll be able to see it in the distance as you tuck into a plate of fresh fish. Located on Porthcawl's seafront, Salthouse on the Square provides the diner with an immensely satisfying dining experience. And no wonder - head chef Stuart Bevan has two AA rosettes to his name, and owners Malcolm and Emma were both trained in London by the Roux brothers. The bar menu is available in the morning, with a selection of breakfasts served until midday. Come noon, the menu offers 'lite bites' like goat's cheese bruschetta, and appetising main courses like slow-roasted shoulder of Welsh lamb and locally caught hake in beer batter. All beef is Welsh Black beef, sourced locally and matured for a minimum of 21 days, and steaks are chargrilled to your liking and served with deliciously chunky chips. A separate evening menu is available, and vegetarians will be delighted to hear that the selection of meat-free dishes changes on a daily basis - the Salthouse risotto is heavenly, and may tempt even the most faithful carnivore. The restaurant is deservedly popular, and has its own Facebook group with over 300 members. Head down today and see for yourself why everyone's talking about Salthouse on the Square.
