Carfraemill, Lauder, TD2 6RA

Carfraemill is a wonderful destination that’s been sat on the edge of the Lammermuir Hills for over a century. Although it’s located just 30 minutes from Edinburgh, you’ll feel a million miles away from the busy city thanks to the enchantingly serene surrounds. Owned by a local farming family, Carfraemill has garnered a great reputation for offering honest, straightforward food inspired by the surrounding landscape of the Scottish Borders - it’s no wonder they were finalists in the Informal Eating category at the Scottish Thistle Awards 2017.

Those dining can expect a menu that changes with the seasons, utilising superb-quality produce sourced as locally as possible, with many ingredients coming directly from the Borders. The owners have searched the local area to discover the best suppliers of lamb and beef, local charcuterie, wild game and artisan cheese. The cosy bistro is a delightful setting in which to dine, complete with a roaring log fire in the winter. Starters include homemade Scotch egg with pickled red onion and seasonal leaves, and you’ll find sharing platters like Scottish Brie drizzled with Tweedside honey and served with toasted walnuts and sourdough. Mains include succulent roast chicken breast wrapped in bacon and served with skirlie (oatmeal stuffing), roast red potatoes and roasted root veg, alongside tender lamb shank slow-cooked in Tempest dark ale. Carfraemill is perfect for the whole family – little ones are provided with toys and colouring pages and pencils. If you’re looking for a tranquil retreat from the city, you’ll find no better destination than Carfraemill.
