Completely renovated, the new look Cobbles Inn is cooking up a storm in the heart of Kelso. This 19th-Century building has experienced a total overhaul, yet the essence of the place has been preserved and enhanced. An enormous original fireplace has been uncovered in the bar area and the upstairs dining room has been tastefully decorated and is perfect for meetings, private dinner parties or even small wedding receptions. One half of the husband and wife team who own The Cobbles is chef Gavin Meiklejohn. Gavin makes every effort to source his ingredients from the local area and makes everything from scratch - their efforts were recognised when the restaurant was awarded the Local Produce Champion award at the 2007 Scottish Borders Eating Out Awards.

The Cobbles features a frequently changing menu, using the finest local produce and seasonal ingredients. At lunchtime tuck into a simple bowl of crispy calamari rings with lemon and cracked pepper aioli, or hungrier appetites can make short work of the Borders steak, mushroom and real ale pie served with hand-cut chips. Evening meals are equally delicious. Smoked haddock fishcakes with tomato salsa or succulent coconut king prawns on Thai cucumber salad with lime and chilli syrup will whet the appetite in advance of slow-roasted belly of organic pork with fennel, black-pudding and apple. The 'dining specials' see medallions of wild roe deer with port and chocolate jus competing for attention with the crispy-skin sea bass on charred Mediterranean vegetables with salsa verde. The sumptuous 'to follow' list features almond and whisky chocolate torte with morello cherries, as well as a selection of local cheeses.

The Cobbles is open from 11am for coffees, lunches from noon, and evening meals from 6pm. Traditional roasts are served on Sundays with two and three-course specials. The inn is child friendly and has facilities for both baby changing and disabled access. With character and atmosphere in abundance, fantastic food, continental beers, real ales and, of course, malt whiskies The Cobbles Inn is winning fans from far and wide; and with such quality from dedicated owners, I count myself among their devotees.
