The Earl of Traquair first opened the doors of St Ronan's Hotel in 1827, and this lovely traditional hotel has enjoyed a steady stream of customers ever since.

Expect to find delicious Scottish fare here, prepared using local ingredients. Begin with homemade chicken liver paté or deep-fried Brie with sweet redcurrant jelly, then perhaps a hearty steak pie, or haggis with whisky sauce. The local fishmonger comes to town each Tuesday in his van; keep an eye out for his delicious fresh haddock on the menu. Vegetarians are by no means neglected - the vegetable and mushroom stroganoff is delicious and just packed with fresh vegetables. Generous portions will please hungry customers, but the dessert menu will tempt those who have already declared themselves fit to burst. Take my advice and go for the sticky toffee pudding - it's a scrumptious treat for the sweet-toothed.

The hotel has a public bar (with free internet access) with a real coal fire that banishes the cold in winter - perfect for curling up in front of with one of St Ronan's tasty bar meals. And in the summer, the large beer garden - complete with children's play area - is just perfect for whiling away an unhurried afternoon. In August, Innerleithen Music Festival holds some events at the hotel - be sure to check the website for details.
