Nestled in the heart of the market town of Duns is The Black Bull Hotel, which has been run by the Turner family for the last nine years. Front of house, Pamela Turner warmly welcomes one and all, while her chef husband, Alan, expertly cooks a succulent selection of quality fare.

They specialise in fresh fish from nearby Eyemouth, with delicacies such as the dressed crab (which is firm and meaty) as a starter, and sea bass with fennel and lemon butter for mains. Meat eaters will revel in locally sourced lamb or beef, such as the rump of Border lamb accompanied by a thick, delicious, mint-infused gravy, and all the vegetables are seasonal and cooked to crunchy perfection. If you have room there is a heavenly choice of desserts. I defy you to resist the raspberry cranachan, brimming with Scottish raspberries - it's a crisp, refreshing taste of summer.

The hotel is home to a pub, a beer garden and two dining rooms - the Spence Room, which can be booked for functions, or the slightly larger, very comfortable Turner Room, which offers an intimate and relaxed dining experience. The Black Bull is rightfully very popular in the evenings, especially on weekends, so it's essential to book to avoid disappointment.
