Situated just a stone's throw from the Pentland Hills and less than half an hour's drive from Edinburgh, this impressive building is an ideal pit-stop for day-trippers in search of tasty sustenance. Craigiebield House Hotel is already a popular venue for wedding receptions and holidaymakers, but more recently general manager Lorenzo Menghini has begun to develop the restaurant side of things - his efforts are certainly starting to bear fruit.

To begin I opted for pan-fried pigeon breast with lardons, red cabbage and creamed onions. The pigeon was a perfect shade of pink, gamey in flavour and complemented perfectly by the sauce. My partner plumped for the goat's cheese gratin with walnut salad, which he assured me was very tasty indeed.

A lot of thought and effort is obviously put into each Craigiebield dish. My main course of seared fillet of sea bass with saffron potatoes, wilted greens and a pea velouté was difficult to fault, the skin on the fish crispy and the flesh inside delicate and succulent; my companion's sirloin of beef with potato Dauphinois, served with a skirlie-stuffed tomato and caramelised shallots, was immaculately presented.

To finish, we ordered a prune and Armagnac tart and a mille-feuille of poached plums in mulled wine syrup - needless to say, we battled over every last morsel.
