This grand, Victorian former bank is now all about fine food at affordable prices. Ideally situated in the centre of Glasgow, The Corinthian Club is always abuzz with activity. Enter and you'll find bars to your left and right, above and below - a myriad of bar styles, including 30s cocktail and girlie boutique all feature, each providing something new and unique. We ate in the grand and majestic banking hall, which is now known as the Tellers Bar and Brasserie. The ceiling soars and is framed by the most amazing cornicing and ornate plasterwork. The restaurant below is replete with beautiful bays and cosy winged seats surrounding a central bar - the lively hubbub is both exciting and welcoming.

I chose the mushroom and pepper risotto, while my guest sampled the crayfish bisque. The bisque swirled with rich flavours of the sea, with the tomato, croutons and melted Parmesan satisfyingly completing the experience. My risotto was cooked to perfection - the rice had perfect bite, exhibiting a fantastic range of delicate flavours and a gentle creaminess. The choice of four whites and reds - as well as two rosé wines available by the glass - were all excellent value for money. The peppery fruitiness of the Chilean chardonnay complemented my meal brilliantly, while the trebbiano also proved refreshing and crisp. My beautifully presented grilled halibut was meaty, set in a lime and parsley sauce with grilled cherry tomatoes offering that just-off-the-vine burst of flavour. My guest's rib-eye steak - chargrilled to her liking - had a delectable barbecued smokiness and the accompanying chestnut mushrooms and tomatoes were flavoursome and well presented. For dessert we opted for the creme brulée, which was served simply in a little copper saucepan; the topping broke just as it should, revealing silky, luscious baked cream beneath. We followed this with a well-stocked cheeseboard, which featured a sizeable bunch of grapes and an array of biscuits and oatcakes which provided a welcome mild contrast to the flavourful cheese.

The Corinthian Club, with its magnificent ceiling, stunning lighting and contemporary art, is a place made for both a special occasion and affordable everyday socialising. Roam through the various bars, take a chance in the stylish gaming rooms, visit the basement wine and beer vaults or tuck into a host of top-quality foods. The ostentatious Victorian architecture - as well as a host of quirky touches - ensures that The Corinthian Club provides a feast for your eyes as well as your palate.
