If you're looking for a night out with a difference or simply a tasty meal for an excellent price, Boteco do Brasil is the place for you. Boteco's vibrant decor and atmosphere make a nice change from your average pub showing sports on big screens. An outdoor area is available for those who appreciate the alfresco experience, but this being Scotland, chances are that you'll have a better time inside.
Glasgow may be a far cry from Copacabana beach, but at Boteco you can get a taste of South America right in the heart of Merchant City. We started the night with a refreshing Caipirinha - Brazil's national cocktail - made with the sugar cane spirit cachaça, limes and ice. For starters we enjoyed some tapas while we picked our main courses - the 'pastelzinho', pastry envelopes wrapping assorted meats and vegetables, offered a little something for everyone.
Even though the bar was packed with people waiting for the salsa dancing to commence, the friendly staff were always very attentive. Since we were new to Brazilian delicacies, the chef came out and introduced some of the options, like moqueca de peixe (a fish stew with coconut milk) and feijoada, a recipe originally brought to South America by the Portuguese. More than just a bean stew, feijoada is without a doubt the cornerstone of Brazilian cuisine, consisting of carefully chosen beans slowly cooked with several choice cuts of beef and pork. The taste is full and distinct, but not spicy, and dominated by the flavours of the black beans and meat - a must try.
As the evening progressed, the Latin band gave way to the DJs and the dancing went on until 3am - even the most reserved will find it hard not to get swept up in the party atmosphere. All in all, the service was outstanding and the food was as fresh as it was delicious. A funky place with a truly lively atmosphere
