Arches Cafe Bar & Restaurant

253 Argyle Street, Glasgow, G2 8DL
Underneath the Victorian arches of Glasgow Central Station is the stunningly different Arches Café Bar. With its exposed piping and brickwork, quirky lighting and cocktails, the restaurant makes for a stylish break from the hubbub of busy Argyle Street. The wide range of dishes, fresh ingredients and bold taste sensations illustrate the skills of head chef Robbie McGuinness. Specials include pizzas with pizzazz, featuring unusual toppings such as steak and scallops. Crusty bread with herb butter set the scene for my starter of vodka-and-chilli-cured Scottish salmon with fluffy potato pancakes and creme fraiche. The vodka and chilli gave the silky slices of salmon depth and warmth, while across the table a starter of soft goat's cheese and nutty walnut fritter contrasted superbly with chunky apricot chutney and aubergine.

My main course - the Arches' take on Scotland's national dish - saw densely flavoured haggis, creamy tatties and golden neeps topped with a meltingly tender steak, proving that haggis is not just for Burns Night. My guest's salad of beetroot, with toasted pine nuts and goat's cheese, was a veritable riot of colour, textures and tastes. The sweet menu was irresistible, and a zesty pineapple carpaccio with creme fraiche, ice cream and a delicious wild strawberry frangipane tart proved the perfect finale to a memorable meal. Everything was served with a smile by friendly staff, at prices to make us return again and again
