Run by Steve and Emma Gard, this Cask-Marque-approved pub not only delivers real ale but also quality homemade food for all the family. The New Inn is within easy reach of the Mendips, and the views from the large hillside garden and play area are spectacular.
The food menu is packed with ingredients that the landlord sources from the local area, leaving diners truly spoiled for choice. I would recommend the divinely smooth smoked mackerel paté with Melba toast to start - light but satisfying. The diverse main menu includes grills of rump steak, chicken and gammon with homemade sauces, vegetarian and fish options, a bar menu including 6oz 100- per-cent-beef burgers, doorstep sandwiches with chunky chips and a children's selection. The 6oz ostrich steak with Dauphinois potatoes from the specials board was tender and full of flavour, as were the home-reared pork faggots in rich onion gravy, served with seasonal vegetables.
I felt slightly wicked not staying loyal to my Somerset roots, but the authentic Florida Key lime pie with creme fraiche and raspberry coulis was the perfect end to a delicious meal - just as well the Mendips were nearby for a bracing post-meal walk.
