The low-key exterior of Wildest Drams on the lively Royal Mile is deceptive. Wander through the charming bar area and you'll reach the restaurant; a contemporary and spacious venue with a distinctly Scottish feel.

The menu showcases some of the best Scottish game. One of the talented chefs is a trained butcher, so great pride is taken in sourcing and preparing meats. Starters include the intriguing tomato and Irn Bru soup, haggis, and a selection of cured meats. When I was lucky enough to visit Wildest Drams, I particularly enjoyed my main course of beautifully tender venison haunch served with creamed cabbage, bacon and crispy heritage potatoes. The beef and ale sausage and mash proved a deliciously hearty option too, and my guest ate every bite. For dessert, the haggis tower - a date and chocolate crumble topped with citrus posset and whisky cream, proved the perfect blend of Scottish flavours. My guest opted for something lighter, finishing with the trio of sorbets; elderflower, gin and tonic, and lime paired with fresh raspberries.

At Wildest Drams, great pride is taken in the beer and whisky selection, and staff will happily offer recommendations. There is also a good range of gluten-free and alcohol-free beers.

A visit to Wildest Drams is made special by the little extras, such as the foraged-leaf salads and homemade ketchup. With friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere to boot, it is the perfect place to enjoy anything from a three-course meal to a few choice drams
