As sea views go, none are quite like the Old Chain Pier's: it's almost as if you are on board a cruise ship, with the water lapping right below you and a dramatic seascape to gaze across. Where better for a fishy feast? The beer-battered fish and chips already has a legion of fans, and the Old Chain chowder is an ideal lunchtime treat.

As I dine here regularly, I decided it was perhaps time to chart a new culinary course and go for something I've never tried before. After much deliberation, I decided on the plump scallops and rich black pudding, which were given an added zing by the accompanying minty pea purée. The brioche with mushrooms in an intense tarragon and pine nut sauce also proved to be a top choice. The steak pie is another Old Chain Pier signature dish, so we just had to try it; featuring light-as-a-feather pastry stuffed with tender beef in a rich sauce, this was a pie just as it should be.

However, it was a pleasingly different pasta dish that gave all my old favourites a run for their money - the crab tagliatelle was unexpectedly lemony, with an indulgent creaminess that brought out the delicate flavour of the crab. Homely apple crumble and rich raspberry and white chocolate cheesecake provided a fittingly decadent finale
