1 Grosvenor Street, Edinburgh, EH12 5ED
Named after renowned poet Omar Khayyam, this popular restaurant can be found on Grosvenor Street and combines the vivacity of downtown Edinburgh with the sophistication of the West End. Omar Khayyam has been serving delicious food for the last 25 years, making it one of the city's oldest Indian restaurants.

After excitedly perusing a menu full of authentic Punjabi dishes, I began with a customer favourite - the Omar Khayyam special Indian curry, offering a unique blend of peaches, pineapple and tomato, complemented by fine spices. Next came succulent chicken shashlik accompanied by the best aloo palak (potato and spinach) I've ever had. My partner chose lentil soup and the sea bass, which I couldn't resist trying. Marinated in Omar's spices and barbecued, it literally melted in the mouth. Presentation is clearly paramount here, with every dish a delight to behold.

A great place for couples or families to dine, the restaurant has also proved popular with those looking for a business lunch in the city centre. An express lunch menu runs Monday to Friday from noon until 2pm, offering three courses (including tea or coffee) for just £8.95, and a full takeaway menu is also available. With a wide-ranging menu that truly caters for all, and excellent service to match, Omar Khayyam has become one of my favourite places to eat - I'll be returning very soon
