Located in Edinburgh’s upmarket Merchiston area, The Caley Sample Room is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and relax over a satisfying meal or a refreshing drink. The varied à la carte menu changes seasonally, offering delicious, freshly made dishes using locally sourced ingredients as much as possible. Tasty starters include the irresistible Scottish moules served with fluffy bread and butter, and grilled goat’s cheese accompanied by cherry tomatoes and a balsamic glaze. Follow with a 28-day-aged sirloin steak served with a grilled tomato, Portobello mushroom, hand-cut fries and a choice of tasty sauces, or perhaps the Caley burger served in a toasted brioche bun ﬁlled with crispy lettuce, Monterey Jack cheese, sweet red onion marmalade, sliced tomato, onion rings and garlic mayonnaise. There are also some excellent hearty favourites, such as beer-battered ﬁsh and chips, and the chef’s pie of the day. For something a little different, why not try a sharing board of delectable charcuterie, cured ﬁsh or vegetarian antipasti? End your meal on a sweet note with one of The Caley’s fabulous desserts, including caramelised pineapple served with coconut ice cream, and dark chocolate and salted caramel tart enhanced by berry compote. There’s also a selection of light bites for those with less of an appetite and there’s a wonderful breakfast menu featuring the likes of full Scottish breakfast, and eggs royale made with delicate smoked Scottish salmon, perfect for a lazy brunch with friends.
The prices are very reasonable for food this good. The set menu, available from Monday to Wednesday, offers excellent value. Two courses are priced at £12 while three courses can be enjoyed for £15. With its welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, The Caley is the ideal spot to bring the whole brood – including the dog – and there’s a delightful children’s menu to keep little ones satisﬁed.
