Café at the Palace
The Café at the Palace of Holyroodhouse is a tasteful and convivial eatery with effortless elegance. Bedecked in shades of grey and white, and offset by stark black and white images, the café has a classy atmosphere, befitting its royal pedigree and proximity to the Scottish Parliament Building, a mere stone’s throw away.
The team at Café at the Palace prepares the menus using the finest Scottish produce, as demonstrated by their Visit Scotland Taste our Best accreditation. You can be sure that only the freshest and tastiest of Scottish delights go into their award-winning afternoon teas. Our delightful afternoon tea consisted of sandwiches, cakes and scones served on three tiers. The savoury element comprised delicate cuts of roast beef and horseradish, smoked salmon atop oatcakes, crostini and sandwiches filled with rich mature Cheddar and real ale chutney. Each component was wonderfully flavoursome.
Of course, the most important factor in an afternoon tea is the tea itself. Café at the Palace excels with a selection of tea such as English breakfast, Earl Grey, Sencha Aloe Vera, Vanilla Toffee Treat, Royal Star and Lemon Rooibos; all of which are served in authentic Burleigh china. This was the perfect follow-up to a glass of crisp and sweet Champagne. The array of confectionery delights included delicate buttery Ecclefechan cakes, strawberry creams, chocolate and Chantilly cream eclairs, and Victoria sponge. To top off the whole delightful affair, the bite-sized scones with jam and clotted cream were divine, and the orange scones with an apricot glaze were a culinary revelation.
