Although it's just out of view when walking past the Salisbury Hotel, it would be criminal to overlook the award-winning Café Cassis. Headed by manager Alison Guillonneau and head chef Denis Guillonneau, this gourmet French restaurant has a fantastic ambience thanks to the intimate setting, chic interior design and welcoming staff. Denis is a creative chef with over 20 years' experience (including work in The Savoy Hotel), and his passion for French cuisine is apparent on the menu, which has a variety of dishes to appeal to any diner's taste.

The food is fresh and vibrantly assembled, with the excellent presentation adding to the theatre of the meal. Portions are generous, and everything is competitively priced. The seasonal menu and diverse specials board only add to the difficult choice - Café Cassis is a restaurant you'll keep coming back to.

When we visited, we sampled incredible starters of fresh Scottish scallops served with warm cuts of black pudding and a crayfish mousse wrapped in pancetta, and ham hock terrine with gribiche sauce. The main courses more than spoke for themselves: roast duck breast marinated in honey, rosemary and Szechuan pepper, served pink as this beautiful meat only ever should be; and an amazing specials board choice of grilled lamb chops with potato Dauphinoise and ratatouille.

Café Cassis are proud to call their restaurant 'Edinburgh's finest French bistro', and after you visit you'll understand why
