Tucked away on Thurland Street is a Mediterranean oasis just waiting to transport you far from Nottingham. Yamas means 'cheers' in Greek, and there's an air of celebration here that's hard to ignore. Freshly prepared dishes are the order of the day, with meze, tapas and sharing starters to choose from. The best way to enjoy meze is to gather a few friends, order a selection of dishes (and plenty of retsina) and let the fun commence. Set over two floors, this restaurant provides the ideal surroundings for a get-together.

We visited for dinner and as we cast a hungry eye over the menu we were thrilled to find an excellent selection of traditional Greek cuisine. We felt spoilt for choice and asked our waitress to recommend a handful of dishes. To begin we ordered patatas bravas, mussels, keftethes, halloumi, dolmades, spanakopita, calamari and a refreshing Greek salad - a medley of colours and textures. Somehow we found room for baklava - melt-in-the-mouth filo pastry drizzled with honey and sprinkled with pistachio nuts - and a couple of cups of glykaniso, which is traditional green tea with aniseed. Yamas serves delicious tapas and meze throughout the day, and there's a fabulously affordable lunch menu available from £4.50. So, if you want to escape to the Mediterranean, you're in luck
