Tucked away off the main road linking the picturesque town of Forest Row to East Grinstead, The Three Crowns is a real find. This is a hostelry with a history, with origins dating back to 1724, serving an extensive menu of modern classic dishes. The decor blends an abundance of exposed wood with muted, earth-tone walls, and there is a designated restaurant area, separate sports area and a large beer garden. It is ideal for families, welcomes large groups for functions and parties and is ideal for lunch and dinner.

Ian and Dawn run the pub - the bar has a great selection of real ales and fine wines. Food is locally sourced where possible and cooked by chef John Underwood. My companion started with chicken liver paté and toast - a generous portion served with a green salad - that she pronounced delicious. I opted for salmon and dill fishcake with a lemon and herb mayonnaise which was stunning. After much deliberation, my companion opted for pan-fried chicken in Stilton and bacon sauce with Dauphinois potatoes, while I had roast belly of pork served with sage jus, and topped with the crispiest melt-in-the-mouth crackling I have ever tasted. When it came to dessert, it was Amaretti crunch ice cream for her and a truly sensational lemon creme brûlée for me. We washed our lunch down with a delicious pinot grigio from the interesting wine list - the perfect accompaniment to a perfect meal.
