Located within the original grounds of Tintern Abbey, adjacent to the river Wye, the historic Anchor Inn nestles in its own beautiful gardens. The main building used to be the abbey's cider mill, and the horsedrawn apple press still holds a commanding position in the bar. Adjoining this building, the ferryman's cottage once accommodated a boat and its custodian, who transported people and goods across the water to England. Attached to the front of the ferryman's cottage is a 12th-Century water gate, which headed a slipway into the Wye. Once the northern entrance gate to the abbey's grounds, it has now become a designated national monument.

The Anchor Inn is under new ownership, and has been completely and sympathetically refurbished, combining modern comfort with an historic ambience. The bar serves a selection of local cask ales, a comprehensive range of other draught and bottled beers, ciders, wines, spirits and liqueurs; speciality and non-alcoholic drinks complete the list.

As for the food, all tastes are catered for and local produce is used, so you can rest assured only the finest ingredients go into every home-cooked meal. Meat-free options are available and The Anchor Inn takes special care to put interesting and appetising vegetarian options on the menu. What's more, the orangery-style café, opening in April 2010, will also offer a wide selection of freshly prepared food with hot and cold drinks. Children are well-provided for with a play area, walkers and their dogs are especially welcome and complimentary WiFi makes this an ideal place to hold informal business meetings. For special events and occasions, The Anchor Inn has the capacity to accommodate 150 people comfortably in the function room. With a good-sized dancefloor and a stage for a band or disco, an enjoyable evening's entertainment is guaranteed. The warmest of welcomes makes a visit to The Anchor Inn a truly pleasurable experience you will want to repeat. Watch out though - the ghosts of the 'grey lady' and 'the white monk' make regular appearances.
