Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
A pub has stood on the corner of Old Dover Road since 1874, and the spot is now home to the appropriately named Phoenix pub, which was rebuilt after a fire in 1968. The Phoenix is one of Canterbury’s best-known pubs, popular with cricket fans, locals and visitors thanks to its excellent selection of real ales and hearty fare. That’s not to mention the friendly, sociable atmosphere cultivated by Bob, Nilla and the team, which ensures everyone who stops by feels right at home. Just like the cosy interior, the menu is traditional, with the likes of ploughman’s lunches, jumbo sausage and chips, and steak pie with a choice of homemade bubble and squeak or chips on offer – all of which are best accompanied by a well-kept ale, perhaps outside on the beer terrace if the weather allows. Landlord Bob really knows his stuff when it comes to ales – he even runs annual beer festivals at the pub.
