coff & Banter's no-nonsense menu offers classic British fare served with an elegant twist. Following our friendly host's recommendation, my companion and I started with king scallops and creamed Desiree potatoes in a rich English mustard sauce, and pork belly scampi with cider jelly, accompanied by irresistible pork scratchings - the most popular dish on the menu. The slow-roasted pork was succulent and tender and the homemade apple sauce, served in a charming mini mason jar, was a real treat. For the main course we tried two other Scoff & Banter bestsellers - roasted chicken cooked in garlic and herbs and accompanied by a delicious bread sauce, and sirloin steak served rare, as our waitress advised, with hand-cut chips and juicy baby vine tomatoes.

Scoff & Banter cater for all dietary requirements; with a nod to the rising demand for gluten-free and dairy-free options, they even offer a flourless chocolate cake. With whole hazelnuts, caramelised orange shards and clotted cream, this stand-out cake was delicious. The beautiful presentation and calibre of ingredients places Scoff & Banter a cut above. We found portion sizes just right - hearty without being overwhelming - and the staff attentive and knowledgeable, happy to make changes according to personal tastes. Scoff & Banter has achieved that rare equilibrium between chic and friendly; you'd feel just as comfortable popping in for after-work drinks and bite to eat as you would indulging in an intimate three-course meal for two. We ate among couples, groups of friends and even families with babies - everyone seemed at home.

For nourishing, reasonably priced and tasty food in a stylish, comfortable setting, look no further than any one of the eight Scoff & Banter venues.
