New Farm Restaurant
Jane and Crispin Bond, proprietors of the New Farm Restaurant, converted this Hamstone building into a restaurant over 20 years ago. Originally a farm run by Jane’s family since the late 1800s, the ethos emphasises local produce freshly prepared and served with a smile. Jane’s sister Sue will welcome you on arrival and ensure your stay is an enjoyable one. The restaurant is spread across two floors. The ground floor has a snug, cosy atmosphere with a wood-burning stove that keeps the chill at bay on winter evenings. Upstairs is airy with high-beamed ceilings and antique farm trappings adorning walls. On balmy summer evenings, the big barn doors are opened for rural air conditioning, transporting diners back in time to when the premises was a working farm.
The menu is a blend of modern British and international dishes, changing regularly to reflect the seasons and the availability of produce. You might start with hazelnut gnocchi with crisp fried egg and shaved Wookey Hole Cheddar, before tucking into mains of local Hinton Harvest guinea fowl with red wine and berries. Round things off with the likes of rhubarb custard cream meringue. Many of the dishes showcase produce from the New Farm garden, such as leaves and vegetables, honey and eggs from the farm’s chickens.
Local beer, cider, wine and spirits enhance an already fabulous dining experience, set against a backdrop of beautiful Somerset countryside. If you are looking to stay the night, there are three en-suite bedrooms available, not to mention a wood-fired eco hot tub for residents’ use.
