The Black Swan
The Black Swan in Pickering is a privately owned 17th-century coaching inn situated at the top of the Market Place. With nine tidy letting rooms, a restaurant and bar in the main building, and Breworks Brewery in the old wash house, The Black Swan has something for everyone. Known for its convivial atmosphere, this charming venue is well established as the social hub of Pickering. You can be sure of an enthusiastic welcome from the amiable staff, and you’ll always find a friendly gathering of regulars to chat to at the bar.
The owners are in the process of renovating the building, which had fallen into a state of disrepair prior to their ownership, so the venue is constantly evolving and changing. Art Deco is a common theme and the stylish new gents’ toilets have become a talking point for all the right reasons since being refurbished. The next planned renovation is the bar area, which will become a more comfortable place in which to relax, socialise, eat and drink.
Food is served throughout the day, so whether you’re visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner you’ll find a plethora of options to take your fancy. Everything is made from scratch in-house, and ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible. The menu evokes a Mediterranean feel, drawing on the owners’ time spent in Turkey, but there are some old favourites for the more traditional palate. Any beer that isn’t sourced from the on-site brewery comes from within a 35-mile radius, with the exception of just one well-known lager.
There’s always a great event happening at The Black Swan, showcasing fantastic local performers who entertain guests with acoustic melodies, jazz ditties and traditional vintage crooning. It’s well worth making a trip to Pickering to experience this excellent establishment for yourself.
