After spending some time away from Wheldrake, doing everything from grave digging to teaching wakeboarding, Ian Hudson is back in his home village running the pub that he had coveted for years. Nestled in the heart of the picture-perfect Vale of York, The Wenlock Arms is a quintessential Yorkshire country pub, boasting original oak beams, a roaring log fire, fine food and drink and genuine hospitality from dedicated staff.

At the bar we were pleased to discover a range of real ales, including Yorkshire-brewed Black Sheep and two regularly changing guest options. We were also impressed by the menu, which showcases Ian's passion for quality and value. I started with a generous mound of juicy garlic mushrooms, served atop a giant slab of toasted ciabatta, while my partner opted for the sea bass, served with crunchy Caesar salad with crispy bacon. For the main course, I couldn't resist the temptation of the home-baked pie; comprising hearty chunks of steak in rich meat gravy with buttered kale and chunky chips on the side, it was just as good as I'd hoped. My partner enjoyed the 8oz steak, served with chips, fresh salad leaves, juicy mushrooms, tomatoes and homemade giant onion rings, which was both seasoned and cooked just to her liking. To finish, we enjoyed generous servings of sticky toffee pudding and chocolate brownie - an indulgent end to a memorable evening
