Step into the past at the bewitching Guy Fawkes Inn, located beneath the imposing York Minster. The notorious gunpowder plotter was born here, and today this historical building is one of the best preserved inns in the country. With gas lighting, timber floors, roaring log fires and ales served from barrels behind the bar, this dark and mysterious inn is a treasure to behold.

The chefs here prepare good, simple, homemade Yorkshire food, utilising fresh, local and in-season ingredients - and they have the most delicious selection of pies to tempt anyone, such as good oldfashioned steak and ale. Indulge in a hearty meal at Guy Fawkes, starting with the likes of pork, sage and caramelised onion paté with toast, or the utterly wicked field mushrooms, which are sautéed with cream and Stilton and served on a bruschetta. Follow with proper beer-battered fish and chips with mushy peas or roast chicken with sage and onion stuffing, and finish with apple and cinnamon crumble - British food really doesn't get much better than this.

If you're feeling full after dinner, walk it off on one of the ghost walks through the town - they leave here every night at 7.30pm, and are a fun and spooky way to learn about York and its haunting past. You can stay here too in one of 12 beautiful hotel bedrooms. Guy Fawkes Inn is a place lost in time, and you'll want to return here time and again.
