Our first impressions of this charming hotel were a delightful hint of what was to come. We were warmly greeted by a receptionist who showed us through to the comfy library lounge - this we shared with a friendly cat, sprawled upon a sofa. The original dining room, reminiscent of a gentleman's club, is small, intimate and furnished with antiques. Not surprisingly, due to demand for tables, it has been augmented by a lovely dining conservatory overlooking a smart and modern polished steel fountain.

An amuse bouche of caramelised poached salmon was a blissful experience, and spoke volumes about the high standards of this restaurant and the excellent quality of the cooking. The Chop Room is already famous for being Yorkshire's first and finest rare breed restaurant, serving English Longhorn beef and traditional Wensleydale lamb as well as fish and vegetarian dishes. On Sundays, luncheon is served with traditional beef and all the trimmings, and subsequently reservations are essential due to the growing popularity. For dinner, I can recommend the Gloucestershire Old Spot pork chop - wonderfully tender, pale as milk and succulent to the last satisfying mouthful. My guest enjoyed the fish pie with a delectable Italian rosé selected from a comprehensive wine list. A short walk from The Minster, this restaurant and hotel is a relaxing haven of peace and tranquillity, with welcoming service, simply cooked food and memorable flavours - a highly recommended watering hole.
