The Biltmore Bar & Grill
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
The first thing that strikes you upon entering The Biltmore Bar & Grill on York’s historic Swinegate is the grand atrium, which houses a glass balcony that overlooks the sophisticated ground-floor bar area. The Biltmore is an ambassador bar for Moët Hennessy, and as such boasts an impressive wine and Champagne list, as well as a popular cocktail selection.
The Biltmore is unique in the sense that it serves fi ve-star street food in a fine dining setting. The chefs smoke their own meat and make their own bread in-house, and make clever use of local, fresh produce in a variety of dishes on the seasonal menu. The cuisine here is inspired by world street food, though the majority of what’s on offer is Asian-inspired, and the menu showcases an enormous array of flavours and aromas. The platter, laden with a taste of head chef Mark Hill’s signature dishes, is divine: the slow-cooked, tender blade of beef with soy reduction and smoky charred orange is the pièce de résistance, the vegan spiced Asian curry is positively bursting with a taste of the Orient, and the avocado with fleshy baked crab cuts through the rich flavours of the beef and spiced curry, while the juicy scallops with black pudding pack a real punch.
My verdict? This stylish bar and grill really stands out in York’s thriving culinary scene.
