The Copthorne Hotel Sheffield opened in January this year and has already established a reputation for quality accommodation and a sophisticated menu of modern restaurant cuisine. On the night we visited, we were warmly welcomed then allowed time, seated at our beautifully laid table, to salivate at the prospect of dining in an oasis of such calm elegance. Linen, leather, walnut veneer, a backcloth of sepia forests lit by downlights simulating shafting sunlight - this is a restaurant that pays attention to the details, ensuring a superb dining experience in every way. From the plain linen napkins, gleaming glasses and cutlery, tealights in glass surrounded by tiny red glass beads co-ordinating with red leather seating, the assured interior design is matched by the confidence of the dishes on the à la carte, table d'hote and newly introduced bistro menu.

And so to the food: an excellent selection for meat eaters, fish lovers and vegetarians, some exquisite desserts and a fabulous and novel cheese menu that includes unpasteurised and organic varieties. Our starters were a feast of glazed goat's cheese, a la grecque vegetables and sun-blush tomatoes, and delectable grilled fillet of sea bass, citrus-braised Belgian endive and smoked paprika rouille. Mains were roasted rack of lamb with Dauphinois potatoes, pea purée and rosemary jus and seared duck breast with curly kale, salsify and herb-crushed potatoes, and tonka bean velouté. Desserts included the chef's own ice creams, which, once tasted, we decided we would happily travel miles for.

The food was fabulous and beautifully presented - edible art on a plate. The head chef (chef profile page 70) described the dishes as 'classical recipes with a modern twist' (certainly an accurate description) but there was also innovation and fun in evidence, with breads such as granary and Guinness and chocolate and mint on offer. Every effort is made to source ingredients locally, organically and seasonally wherever possible. Wonderful food and a wonderful evening; The Copthorne Hotel Sheffield will soon be one of the destination restaurants for discerning diners in Sheffield - just make sure you are one of them
