With all food freshly prepared, home-cooked and full of flavour, Arusuvai is rightly proud of its reputation for quality dining. Drawing on a wealth of South Indian and Sri Lankan traditions, recipes used at this Sheffield restaurant have been passed down through the generations and are completely free of modern preservatives. Spices are imported directly from India, ground and roasted on site, and then used liberally to create a fantastic array of authentic flavours.

Our dinner for two started with a pair of mutton rolls in breadcrumbs and a portion of dahi vada - deep-fried doughnuts generously dipped in chilled yoghurt. We complemented this with a glass of chardonnay from the carefully selected wine list and a pint of the excellent Sri Lankan Lion beer.

All of the meals at Arusuvai are cooked from scratch to order and our starters set us up nicely for the sensational main courses. The main event for me was a suitably spicy king prawn biriyani and for my companion a milder, but still distinctively fresh, chicken korma, both accompanied by egg-fried rice and chapatti bread.

The translation of Arusuvai is 'tastebuds' - a very apt name. Every dish is perfectly prepared to arouse your sense of taste. Connoisseurs of Indian cuisine will especially enjoy the Chettinadu curries - with 16 different spices, they come highly recommended by the chef
