It's easy to get a good feeling about a restaurant when, on arrival, other diners can be overheard commenting on what a charming and intimate place they have come to. The family-run Surf & Turf Restaurant is warm and unpretentious, with a beautifully presented interior. It's the place to come for a great range of seafood alongside carefully selected meat and vegetarian dishes.

Whilst we waited for our starter, we were presented with bread and a selection of homemade dips including a delightful kidney bean hummus. To start, I selected the smoked haddock, served with bubble and squeak mash and a finely poached hen's egg, whilst my partner opted for black pudding with bacon, fried quail's egg and homemade chutney. As with all the dishes we would sample that evening, the flavours were extremely well balanced with a careful eye for detail from the chef, who creates the recipes herself.

My partner continued with a generously sized sea bass fillet in a tomato, basil and garlic sauce, whilst I chose a rib-eye steak with glorious marbling accompanied by home-cut chips and a green peppercorn and brandy sauce. Both plates of food were cooked perfectly to specification. For dessert, we tried the freshly prepared vanilla cheesecake and the toffee crunch pie; each were served with cream, and each were an absolute treat
