Visit The Devonshire Cat expecting the best and you will not leave disappointed. A bright, welcoming exterior, a tastefully decorated, spotless interior and friendly, efficient, knowledgeable staff all await. Drink connoisseurs will be delighted with the vast selection of hand-pulled ales, ciders, wines and bottled beers. A large glass-fronted cupboard, known as The Beer Box, displays the 120 bottled beers available, and is in itself a reason to visit.

The food is utterly delicious - we tried herby mushroom, leek and goat's cheese crumble (£8) which literally melted in the mouth, and a lip-smacking duo of tender pork with cheesy herb mash and veg (£11.25). Everything is prepared from scratch using locally sourced ingredients wherever possible. The Cat's talented young chef was hand-picked by managing director John Cawthorne, whose personal favourite on the menu is the king prawn spaghetti.

Couples, families and singletons of all ages will feel welcome here - sit in peace with a book, borrow a board game, play the wall-mounted Nintendo or even watch main sporting events (kept to a tastefully low volume). Have a sandwich, jacket potato, special or simply enjoy a drink while absorbing the atmosphere. The Devonshire Cat is close enough to the centre of thriving Sheffield to access easily; I'm already looking forward to my next visit. *Price range represents a main course, side dish and glass of wine.
