James Barrett is owner and head chef at this lovable bistro. Having previously worked at restaurants in London and abroad, including Michelin-starred establishments, James' knack for preparing imaginative dishes is second nature. He creates every recipe himself and uses fresh, local produce wherever possible.

Upon arrival we received a thoroughly friendly welcome. We took our own bottle of wine - Barrett's offers a 'bring your own' policy with no corkage charge - and were brought complimentary olives with oil and three flavours of homemade bread to accompany it. This set our expectations high for the food to come, and we weren't disappointed. Starters of oak-smoked salmon for me and tender chicken livers, served with handmade black pudding and crispy bacon, for my partner were simply fantastic. For main I opted for the goat's cheese pastry tart (a cheese-lover's heaven) with a takka dahl sauce, while my partner tucked into moist, fresh and tasty baked sea trout, served on a bed of crushed Jersey Royals with an almond butter sauce. Both dishes came with purplesprouting broccoli - the perfect accompaniment. To finish we indulged in Bramley apple tart and coconutand- lemongrass rice pudding - the crowning glory of a meal that brought joy with every mouthful.

With a well-lit car park, a private dining room and catering provided for kids' parties, it's no wonder Barrett's Bistro is a big hit.
