Hillam is a pretty village with all the staples of Yorkshire country life: an historic church, a primary school, a local cricket team and a splendid pub. As soon as we crossed the threshold of the Cross Keys Inn, I was heartened by the real ale hand pumps and soon made my acquaintance with crisp Adnams Lighthouse.

On enquiry I was delighted to find that the soup of the day was a Thai chicken broth - not your run-of-the-mill pub variety, but totally delicious. The remarkably high standards set by this hot and sour, devilishly spicy starter were maintained throughout a great evening out. My partner's fishcakes starter, so big they were almost a meal in themselves, were outstanding, followed up by 10oz sirloin steak - the perfect pub dish, accompanied by garden peas, chunky chips, juicy beef tomato and a leaning tower of onion rings. I'd gone for the smoked haddock: a generous fillet buried beneath cheesy mashed potatoes with a lovely soft-poached egg.

We were flagging by now, but forced ourselves to tackle two seriously old-school desserts - a rich, dark sticky toffee pudding and a spongy spotted dick. After such a wonderfully nostalgic end to our meal we were truly replete. Coffees followed, a short drive, then satisfied sleep. Lots of it
