The Three Hares at Bilbrough
Pubs and Bars with Restaurants
If ever there was a hidden gem, it has to be the charming Three Hares, set in the lovely village of Bilbrough, just outside York. The menu choice is wonderful, with everything from doorstep sandwiches to succulent roasts, and everything is freshly prepared. We started our meal with olives and a selection of warm, aromatic, rustic breads - the cumin variety was outstanding - served with a wonderful oil and balsamic vinegar dip. For our main course we chose one of the seafood platters, and it was as pretty as a picture: fresh, whole brown crab, king prawns, crab claws, langoustines, whole crayfish and oysters, all nestling on a bed of crushed ice. I was reassured to learn that all the seafood - including the fabulous mussel pots - is sustainably sourced, and local produce suppliers are used as much as possible. After this delicious feast we moved onto the terrace to tuck into a fabulous cheese platter which included the local Yorkshire Blue and Wensleydale. For those with a sweet tooth, a scrumptious selection of puddings is available. Whether you're visiting for Sunday lunch, a succulent steak, a light bite or alfresco dining on the lovely terrace after a day at the races, you're sure to fall for this charming village pub.
