Harpers Fish & Chips
The salty smell of chips evokes memories of eating delicious golden morsels covered in vinegar out of newspaper, and luckily Harpers Fish & Chips is easy to find when you want a lip-smacking, nostalgia-inducing food. This smart restaurant is located on the A64 – just minutes away from the village of Staxton and boasts a great reputation for serving tasty meals that are cooked to order.
You can take away or dine in the restaurant, which accommodates large parties as well as providing intimate seating for smaller groups. The modern interior of neutral tones makes for a relaxing, comfortable dining area where families are welcome.
On the menu are traditional favourites, daily specials and fish-free dishes. In addition, there are special offers throughout the week, a menu for little ones and a senior citizen special, which is available daily.
I chose prawn cocktail for my starter: piquant Marie Rose sauce, crisp salad and a lightly toasted baguette. My companion’s delicious battered king prawns were served with an accompaniment of salad and spicy sweet chilli sauce. For mains, my partner chose minted lamb shank from the specials selection and the tender meat in rich gravy, served with mashed potato and seasonal vegetables, proved a generous feast. I couldn’t resist the famous Harpers cod and chips and my anticipation was rewarded. White, flaky cod was encased in the lightest golden batter and the hand-cut chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce were all I’d hoped for. We just about managed a creamy sherry trifle and portions of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla ice cream drizzled with sauce from the dessert board.
It’s easy to see why locals make a habit out of calling in on their way home – I think we might be joining them.
