Desi Spice Club
Indian and South Asian
Beadlam, Nawton, Nr. Helmsley, YO62 7SU
From the outside, the Desi Spice Club looks like an old-world country pub but step inside and you'll find a wonderful light, stylish and contemporary interior. Beautifully laid wooden tables and large leather chairs greet you, as does the striking blue lighting featured throughout the restaurant - it's modern chic with a 1960s' twist. Located in the beautiful village of Nawton, near Helmsley, the Desi Spice Club is set firmly in the Yorkshire Moors. Part of a group who have been involved in the Bangladeshi and Indian restaurant industry for the last 20 years, Desi Spice are truly cuisine experts. Opening this brand new restaurant three years ago, Kalam Shah and his team have brought a new and exciting flavour to the edge of the North York Moors. As you walk into the bustling restaurant, the wonderful aromas of spice and all things nice hits you. The award-winning chefs at Desi Spice have created a truly fantastic menu for all palates to test and try. To start, why not sample a spicy lamb samosa, or aloo tikki - North-Indian-style potato patties. Looking at the menu, it's incredibly hard to make your choice, there really is the widest range of lamb, chicken, duck, beef, fish and vegetarian dishes on offer. Upon the advice of our charming and knowledgeable waiter, I opted for one of the Desi Spice Club's best sellers - boal machli rushoon palak. This traditional Bangladeshi freshwater fish is full of flavour I'm told, and when cooked in a medium spice sauce with garlic, spinach, herbs and spices I had to agree - I can certainly see why this dish is so popular with diners. My dinner guest simply couldn't decide what to go for, so he had it all - his deluxe thali was an amazing combination of dishes chosen by the chef himself, a fabulous way to really get a taste of what's on offer. Polishing off a couple of Kingfisher beers with our meals, we sat back and began to plan our next visit to the Desi Spice Club - soon I hope.
