Since opening in 1996, this cosy coffee house has gone from strength to strength, gradually becoming known as a go-to place to relax and savour the delights of a perfectly brewed, award-winning coffee.

Attention to every element is paramount in proprietor Simon's approach to customer service - everything has to be just right. The menu offers an assortment of Mediterranean sandwiches, fresh salads and wraps, including the satisfyingly zingy chicken, sweet chilli, cucumber and sour cream wrap we tried. Ingredients are locally sourced and the bread is baked in-house. We also sampled some special products from the area, such as salami from local butcher, Fletchers, which featured in the superb antipasti selection alongside sundried tomatoes, kalamata olives and feta. To finish, we indulged in a delicious rose, honey and ginger cake - just one of the speciality cakes that are also baked in-house.

The café is rustic and charming, with coffee-brewing paraphernalia and old books dotted around the place, and still boasts original features such as panelling, wallpaper and ironwork from its days as a butchers' shop. Simon maintains that the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the café is a natural phenomenon, which he has preserved by keeping the building true to its roots. Simon has won the UK Barista Championship three times, and came eighth in the world for his coffee-brewing skills in the 2005 Barista Championships, which are accolades definitely reflected in the coffee - ours was a cut above, served at the perfect temperature, strength and richness
