Tony and Vicky Jowett bought this famous village inn in 2014 and have worked hard to build a well-deserved reputation for hearty Yorkshire hospitality. An evening of quality food and drink began with a generous portion of deep-fried whitebait with homemade tartare sauce for me, and a bowl of the creamy garlic mushrooms for my partner – pure comfort food. My partner followed with the blue cheeseburger, while I plumped for three heroically proportioned pork, onion and black pepper sausages, served atop a mound of creamy mash with rich onion gravy, with plenty of vegetables on the side. Hand-pulled pints of the Ex-Wife, a well-balanced session ale from the Three Brothers Brewing Co. on Teesside, proved an ideal accompaniment to these. The dessert board was awfully tempting, but we decided to share a cheeseboard and brought our evening to a close in true Yorkshire style.
