Along one of Leeds' most ancient streets you'll find a rather lively establishment. As we approached the threshold, the wonderful aromas escaping from family-run Safran Restaurant enticed us inside. Safran is waking diners up to a range of delicious Middle Eastern dishes, made using only the finest ingredients and packed with exciting flavours. The shared chicken mixed starter was a great choice to whet our appetites. The minced chicken arrived in a buttery glaze amidst an impressive and beautifully presented selection of olives, salads, falafels and hummus and an oversized naan bread for good measure. Main courses are divided between grilled dishes and stews - two traditional features of Persian cuisine - so we tried one of each. My partner's joojeh kebab consisted of marinated chicken which was served with grilled tomatoes, rice and salad, while I chose one of Iran's national dishes, ghormeh sabzi. It was a dazzling combination of lean diced lamb and kidney beans in a herby sauce that was delicately spiced, allowing the flavours of the meat to shine through. We also shared rich and sweet baklava before ending our meal with earthy Turkish coffee and aromatic Persian tea, which was heady with the scent of parma violets
