It's always reassuring to see a Thai restaurant full of happy diners, but when the clientele are largely expats from Thailand, you know you're onto a winner. Saengarun is the name of the chef here, and people travel from far and wide to sample her exquisite food.

I invited our waiter to choose our food for us - and we weren't disappointed. For starters we had Thai fishcakes and Isan sausage (a fermented Thai sausage reminiscent of chorizo) served with a side dish of chillies and ginger, accompanied by generous slices of cucumber to cool the palate. Next we tucked into the restaurant's signature dish, som tam yai Saengarun (papaya salad served with marinated chicken and sticky rice), and prawn and pineapple Thai curry, both of which had our tastebuds tingling. A flavour-packed dish of pork and bamboo shoots meant we had no room left for dessert - an omission we'll rectify next time.

If you're looking to spark memories of your Thai holiday, want a chance to try something different (safe in the knowledge it will be delicious), or are simply looking for good food at excellent value, this is the place for you. Situated close to the railway station, Saengarun Thai alone is worth a trip to Leeds.
