It is claimed that Chinese cuisine improves your health and boosts your intelligence, so why not go for the best value and eat it all the time? The all-you-can-eat buffet at Maxi's Express comes in at £9.90 and includes soup and prawn crackers, an array of starters, seemingly endless main course selections and an attractive, abundant display of desserts.
Chicken and sweetcorn soup and the spare ribs are must-have starters, the seaweed rolls shouldn't be missed, skewered chicken sticks in satay sauce are to die for, and that old favourite, prawn toast, is as good as you're likely to get in the UK. Maxi's makes grazing paradisiacal.

Mains are a roll-call of everything that's great about Chinese cooking, with exceptionally good home-cooked pork and tomato, peppered beef, stir-fried vegetables, chicken and mushrooms and a helping of king prawns whose flavour leaps to the sprightly notes of garlic and ginger.

Desserts, meanwhile, seem a synthesis of English summer days, being by turns fresh, delicate and indulgent and ranging from a simple chopped apple salad to a trifle of epic proportions.

All of this and the wine - at a more than reasonable £9.50 for a house bottle - made me a happy camper. At Maxi's Express you can really fill your boots.
