The beauty of Bar 166 is its sheer simplicity. With fixed price lunch and bistro menus this venue specialises in keeping the customer happy and the prices minimal. Chic and sleek, the design is equally uncomplicated; with polished wooden floors, brown and red leather upholstery, and exposed brickwork, the result is effortless style and comfort.

From noon until 2.30pm, you are invited choose a £4, £5, £6 or £10 lunch. For £4 you can bag yourself hearty soup with crusty bread or a tasty sandwich (toasted or not). £10 dishes include the delicate fillet of sea bass teamed with sauté potatoes, wild mushrooms and crispy rocket with a truffle dressing.

The evening bistro menu is an elegant affair with the chef pulling out all of the stops to dazzle the palate and excite the hungry diner. Examining the well thought-out wine list, we opted for a creamy Australian semillon chardonnay which proved an ideal accompaniment. To begin, the confit duck and Parma ham ballantine with red onion marmalade got things of to a very promising and flavourful start. Having then feasted on the pork fillet wrapped in bacon, apple, sweet potato and buttered cabbage, I found myself confronted with a quite spectacular looking Eton mess and savoured every subsequent mouthful.

Classic and contemporary cocktails lure you to stick around for post dinner drinks and soak up the atmosphere. You could even take a walk down the road to the next bar along, SixtyToo Bar, which is the sister venue of Bar 166
